Welcome to the Mapiau.Net website. It began as an attempt to visualise properly the ancient divisions of Wales, and that eventually led to creating the map of the country in the age of the princes.

Then, during the lockdown periods of 2020 and 2021, with nothing better to do, I started doing a detailed analysis of the 1891 census, when a question was asked for the first time about the languages spoken in Wales. Looking at the older natives in each area it was possible to make maps showing the linguistic situation at the time when Wales at a fairly early stage of the sweeping transformation it underwent in the nineteenth century.

To go along with that a corresponding analysis was done of the religious census of 1851 in order to ascertain the strength of nonconformity and the established church in the different parts of the country in the same period.

That is the basis for the three sections of the website. With time and perseverance, more may eventually be added.

It is hoped that the information shown here may throw some additional light on relatively obscure aspects of our past.

It has to be accepted that the best way to display information is a mater of opinion, but any suggestions about possible improvements or corrections will be welcome.
